Frugal Gardening Project

When the warm weather arrives I love to get out and garden. A few weekends ago we decided to work on a project that we hope will save us some money, brighten our backyard and prove to be more convenient!
...
Since moving to our home three years ago we had been using a "temporary" propane grill that we purchased at Lowes. It is a nice grill but we had become accustomed to a natural gas grill at our previous home and missed it dearly. We cook out a lot in the spring, summer and fall and buying that propane tank every couple of weeks was not for us. Plus the cost of a tank went up from around $17 with a trade to $23.
...
It took a few days of work but now our propane grill is converted to natural gas and hooked into our natural gas line in our home. NO MORE PROPANE! This conversion and hook-up was a birthday gift to my husband from my dad-the grillmaster, who is a true believer in natural gas grilling.
...
The grill was moved off the deck and given a permanent home on a cement pad. I created the tidy little stone walkway leading from the deck to the front of the grill one Saturday afternoon and just love how it turned out. It wasn't frugal at $7 per stone and I contemplated just going in the woods and picking out some rocks. That would have only cost me around $6 for the plastic and pebbles I used. But I just loved those big stones that I ended up finding at Walmart.

During that project I landscaped around my entire 60 foot deck. Since this is the back of our house I didn't want to spend a lot, so a frugal friend who was thinning out her perennial bed gave me two huge tubs of hostas, daylillies and more. I used a four dwarf Alberta spruce trees for more permanent plantings but used primarily hostas to fill in. Home Depot has the Alberta Spruce trees for only $6.98 and all my other plantings were FREE. I spent a little on the mulch, fabric cover, and edging, but saved a huge amount with all the perennials I got from my friend.

One of my favorite things about planting perennials is that they multiply and can be thinned and used throughout your garden. I have even thinned my perennials and used them as fillers in my pots.

How is your garden growing? What are your frugal gardening tips? I would love to hear about your gardening projects!

Oh wow! That stone walkway is really cute! Was that hard to do? I'd love to make a garden path like that through my backyard but am afraid to tackle something like that!

My CVS sells mulch, potting soil, and some plants. This weekend I used $15 in ECB's to purchase 4 bags of mulch and one bag of potting soil...only spent $.34 OOP!

A perennial swap is such a good idea and a great way to get some cheap landscaping! Thanks for the idea!

I really like hostas, especially verigated. Our evergreens have not held up well due to kid and dog traffic but the hostas come up fresh and green no matter what gets done to them.

Awesome stone path :)
