Did you know that the laundry detergent you may be using could contain little-known chemicals called optical brighteners? According to scientific research, these can cause allergic reactions, are toxic to small fish and other aquatic life, and can pollute your waterways.
When ultraviolet light hits optical brighteners coating your clothing, the brighteners convert UV rays into visible light to create an optical illusion. This tricks the eye into thinking the clothing is whiter and brighter, and therefore cleaner than it really is.
So how can you avoid these optical brighteners?
Seventh Generation makes it easy because their laundry detergents are not only free of optical brighteners, but they’re also non-toxic . In addition, because Seventh Generation liquid laundry detergents are both hypo-allergenic and biodegradable, you can rest easy knowing you made a considerate choice for your family and the environment.
Take a look at the expiriment above done with conventional laundry detergent and Seventh Generation, both on cream colored T-Shirts! The black light shows the Seventh Generation T-shirt does not reveal any optical brighteners.

Only slightly considered the impact laundry detergent has the the environment. When shopping for detergent, more frequently consider the impact the bottle has on my wallet.

I've never thought about laundry detergent--though I've considered many other things that I use and how to minimize the impact I have on the environment. Going to have to give this one some thought.

Yes, originally it was phosphates we had to reduce!
No, I haven't thought that much about it.

Last year I made a commitment to not purchase laundry detergent with unnecessary perfumes and dyes. I admit I fell off the wagon a couple of times when I was able to pick up laundry detergent for FREE @ Rite Aid on sale. But for the most part if there is now perfumes and dyes in the detergent, I'm not putting it in the environment.
I get upset when I watch the news about how factory pollution or toxic spills get into the river where we get our drinking water from, but we do it to ourselves as well, for every load, from every house, it becomes water waste in the same way as a factory use and waste water. I think we say it gets cleaned/filtered, so it's not a big concern, but it's easy to say that. I try to go green as much as I can, but I think I'm just from a small group.
Not really thought about it

I have. That's why I use Seventh Generation cleaning products. When I noticed the brightly colored stains on the side of my washer I had no idea what they were (now I do). But it weirded me out enough to switch.
I'm really starting to pay attention to anything organic or "green" I can do for my family right now with two little ones. Laundry is definitely an area I need to look into! Thanks! andhattman@aol.com

I think about it.
I try to purchase laundry soaps, detergents and cleaners that are "green". I figure if I try to do my little part - I can make an impact, even if it is a small one.
Thanks!

I have mainly considered the impact of laundry detergent on my sensitive skin, but I'm guessing the types that work best for sensitive skin are also more environmentally friendly.
hugzeke@gmail.com
I never gave much thought to how my laundry detergent affects the enviroment - usually trying to find the most effective one and the best price.
