Tips for Getting MORE Family Fun & Value + Giveaway

One of my top family goals is to get more out of everyday life without spending a ton of money.  Some of my best childhood memories were made with wonderful family activities my mom created that cost.....NOTHING.

Here are some ways we've saved money and created memories of our own:

Find FREE or Cheap Family Fun
With (5) people in our family, weekend outings to the movies (easily $75) or Chuck E. Cheese (another easy $75) just are not practical!  I love being creative and finding fun events that are totally free!  One of our favorite winter events is to head over to our local college campus and go sled riding on the big hillside.  It is fun, FREE and provides plenty of exercise!  Game night, movie night at home, hiking and biking are other things that top our list of FREE fun!

Find Deals and Shop Smart
Using coupons and finding great deals are high on my list of priorities for my family.  Finding great values, allows us to save money, take vacations, and have all of the things we need!  Stockpiling allows me to free up time I'd normally spend on shopping, to dig up more great deals!

Eating Healthy Balanced Meals on a Budget
While finding deals is important, so too is eating healthy.  Doing that on a budget is a challenge I'm up for!  Seeking deals on healthy unprocessed foods is a top priority.  I accomplish this mainly by shopping for fresh fruits and vegetables at Aldi, but also keep dining out to a minimum, which saves us quite a bit!

About 11 years ago we bought a 1/12 share in a vacation house on a lake about 2 hours away. We paid cash for our share of the house and now all we have to pay out each year is $480 in maintenance fees. We get a week every season of the year (4 weeks total). For a family of 7 this was our best vacation value. Now most of the time it only hubby and me who go there but it is a great inexpensive getaway. You might think we would get tired of going the same place all the time but we get excited to go to our other town which is small and laid back and not at all like our hometown.

My most cost effective tip is to use coupons whenever you can! Until I started couponing I had no idea that there were coupons/discounts available for EVERYTHING- restaurants, movies, even discount codes for hotels! Once I discovered this, I was able to stretch my family's entertainment budget that much further.

If I'm planning on a small getaway with my husband (once a year), we use priceline's "name your own price" feature. We get hotels on the cheap that way.

We spent about $10 on 50 pounds of cracked corn and every few weeks we find a new park or spot where there are ducks and we go to feed the ducks! The kids (ages 6, 6, and 10) absolutely love this and my husband and I love how frugal it is!

Over 30 years ago we had an in ground pool installed and believe it or not it has been a real money saver for us. We had the kids and now the grandkids birthday parties there. We always buy small little pool toys at the end of the season and use those for birthday favors. When they have friends over for sleep overs we don;t have to find a way to entertain them. Just let them swim, throw some hot dogs and marshmallows on a bonfire and everybody is happy.

We have a netflix subscription instead of visiting the movies and we do a lot of crafts, almost always with stuff we already have on hand.

We invite my parents to come on vacation with us. They usually pitch in on the rental expense which makes it affordable for us. Plus the kids love having Grandma and Grandpa along on vacation!

We don't live too far from the beach. We pack our food and some towels (and umbrella) and we can have a fabulous beach day for just paying a $1 toll fee :-)

My sister in law and her husband have a trailer only 2 miles from the beach so every summer they let us use it for a week. I can't begin to tell you how much money that has saved us! They even let us use their car which has the parking pass on it so we don't have to pay daily for parking at the beach. We bring our own food so that also makes our week away really thrifty!!
